First things first.
So. I've come up with a hair-brained scheme I'd like to share with you. It's basically to keep me writing and recording new stuff without the end-goal of producing a record and at the same time gauge your interest in said music. I'm going to be recording a series of solo songs. Some will be covers of popular songs, some new original stuff, some re-worked old stuff, some obscure covers, etc. Some will be just piano and vocals, some will be more fully arranged. I may even rap. That's right. And I will offer them up to you, one at a time, upon their completion. There will be at least ten total, so in the end, they'll equal the duration of a record. They'll probably come out every few weeks, but they may be one-a-month. And they'll be a buck each.
Now, here's the potentially interesting part: if you pay $10 ahead of time, you will get the mp3s delivered to your inbox when they're completed without having to do anything else, along with a handful of odds-and-ends not available anywhere else or previously before--demos, live recordings, song sketches, etc. I'm calling this the Single-of-the-Month Club. If you don't wish to subscribe, I'll still let you know when the new songs are done and available to buy (I'll provide a brief preview so you can see if you want to pony up the dollar). But to those of you who ARE interested, The Club is the way to go. You'll get at least ten new songs--basically a new record once the program is complete--PLUS a veritable BUTTLOAD of miscellaneous music that will be the equivalent of a disc of bonus material.
You can join by clicking the DONATE button above. Please provide your best e-mail address to deliver the mp3s when donating.
I'm offering the first song for FREE. It's a cover of MGMT's "Time To Pretend" from their 2009 album "Oracular Spectacular". I picked it because it's probably my favorite "pop song" of last year. Ever year there seems to be one song that I never tire of hearing, and this one was it for me in '09 (much the same The Walkmen's "The Rat" was a few years back). It's a simple four chord song, but it has a great ascending melody in the second part of the verse, great harmonies, and a sweet-yet-twisted, decadent lyric. I know the song's a bit played out, but there really hasn't been a good cover of it. And YES, I'm aware The Kaiser Chiefs and the dude from Sigur Ros covered it. My statement still stands. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.
